Below is a rundown of the different harvest festivals all Marin residents should know about. Note that some communities, such as Napa, held their parties earlier this month.
- Valley of the Moon Vintage Festival -- Sept. 26-28. California's second-oldest festival after the Rose Parade. There will be a grape-stomping competition on Saturday and Sunday. In and around Sonoma's historic Plaza, Broadway at West Napa Street. For more information about the festival's many events, go to sonomavinfest.org.
- Sonoma County Harvest Fair is scheduled for Oct. 3-5 at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. On Friday, the fair features unlimited tastings of award-winning wines ($40), wine sales and livestock exhibits. There's more wine tasting on Saturday as well as beer tastings ($15 for five tastes and a souvenir glass). Events include: a scarecrow-building contest, barnyard scramble, pumpkin tossing, a bake-off and cooking demonstrations. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for children 7-12, and children 6 and younger are free. Sonoma County Fairgrounds, 1350 Bennett Valley Road, Santa Rosa. - The Big Crush Harvest Festival is scheduled for Oct. 4-5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 30 Amador County wineries are participating in this festival, each with separate celebrations. Tickets to the festival cost $35 for both days and are available at select vineyards, or $30 in advance (available on Web site). - Prager Winery & Port Works is holding its first-ever harvest celebration and tasting Oct. 11-12. in St. Helena. Between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., guests can sample several of the winery's fortified wines, along with chocolate, cheeses and candied walnuts. Tasting fee of $10 includes an embossed logo glass.
